Court Upholds Wrongful Verdicts Against Housing Rights Defenders in Cambodia

The Court of Appeal in Phnom Penh today upheld the wrongful verdicts against ten women housing rights activists and a monk for their participation in peaceful protests. Civil Rights Defenders has been monitoring the situation in Cambodia since the 11 activists were arrested over three days back in November 2014.

Land communities’ member and monks demand in front of CC1 to release 19 land activists

On the morning 23 November, 2014, for the second Sunday, around 200 land communities' members, NGOs, students and monks gathered outside CC1 and CC2 prisons to support the 19 activists imprisoned there.

The US politician and elected representative for the state of Massachusetts, M. Morm Rady, addressed the crowd along with the relatives of the detainees. The land communities then, headed toward the Municipal court.

Australian Greens' Senator for South Australia met representatives from urban poor communities of Phnom Penh at HRTF’s office

On the morning of 17 November, 2014, the Australian Greens' Senator for South Australia, Mrs Sarah Hanson-Young met representatives from urban poor communities of Phnom Penh, youth group and monks in order to discuss about the human rights situation of Cambodia, especially regarding the sending of refugees from Australia to Cambodia. The activists could explain the dire living conditions they are forced to endured after being evicted to express their doubt and concerns about seeing refugees in the Kingdom.

Senator Sarah Hanson-Young went then to a field trip to HRTF's target groups (Borei Keila, Boeung Kak...) to see the real housing of the urban poor residents.

Lor Peang community were blocked and beaten by police forces

On August 13th 2014, around 60 residents from Lor Peang community, Kompong Chhnang province, marched from their village to Phnom Penh in order to submit their petition and complaint to the National Assembly, as well as official buildings, regarding the forced eviction they are suffering.

n the way they were blocked and beaten by police forces, leaving 6 women unconscious. Despite this violence they continued their journey and were assisted by the land communities of Phnom Penh as well as monks in order to go through the several blockages organized by the Authorities on the road.

At around 5pm they arrived finally in Boeung Kak area where they will rest before undertaking further marches to the Assembly and embassies.
